Band Auxiliary Zero Hour: 0
Instructor: Liza Noriega
Band Auxilary (Colorguard) & Winter Auxilary (Winterguard) is an expressive Performance Art Class offered at all SUSD campuses. It is here that a student will learn how to convey the musical presentation of music through the use of colorguard equipment & movement. In the Fall, the guard portrays the music and show concept of the Marching band by performing stand routines and a full field show. They will compete and perform Football games and in/out of stage band competitions. In the Winter, the guard will portray a designed show for indoor guard competition. Since this course is taken by instructor approval, students will audition each season. Members should be in good health and should disclose ANY and all illnesses/injuries to the instructor and director as they come up. Because this is a participatory class, attendance and participation are the bulk of the students' grade. Weekly performance responsibilitie4s will be up to the discretion of the instructor. Parental support and participation will increase the success of the student. Parents should stay up to date by visiting the dmhs band website weekly. For assessment, please refer to the Fall/Winter syllabus during the first week of class.

*if you are currently trained in: baton, ribbon, gymnastics or swing flags, you will be a terriffic candidate for colorguard. You will be able to apply your previous training to enhance this craft!

What else do I need for the colorguard season?
During the first week of school, we will send home the parent volunteer forms and give final information regarding Costume and accesory purchase for the season.  Guard members will need to buy their own uniforms, undergarments, shoes, gloves AND maintain their equipment using white or black electrical tape.  ALL MEMBERS SHOULD HAVE WHITE AND BLACK TAPE IN THEIR BAGS.  Families already paid a $50 equipment deposit.  This will not be used for general wear and tear.  However, if the equipment is damaged in ANY WAY, monies will be deducted from this deposit.  We have provided a guard bag and will provide all equipment the student will need all season.

Marching Band Rehearsals

In the fall, rehearsals take place before school at 7:00 am, beginning in August a week prior to the beginning of school and ending mid-November after State Marching band festival. The marching band rehearsals, the week prior to school, are very important to new band members, all the basics of marching and playing your instrument will be taught. The band also learns the Marching Band Show for competition.  This group participates at pep assemblies, football games, and festivals.  Tuesday evening rehearsals will be from 5-9pm.

We will NOT meet regularly for Wednesday morning rehearsals UNLESS:  We are learning new choreography and are behind, need additional weapon training or in preparation for a competition.  YOU WILL HAVE ADVANCE NOTICE ON THE MONDAY OF THAT WEEK IF WE WILL BE MEETING ZERO HOUR ON WEDNESDAY.  The Marching Band Program for 2009 is called "Game Over".  We will take our audience on a journey to explore and celebrate the amazing technology of THE VIDEO GAME!  Begninning with a moment of "Pong" and venturing through some of Nintendo's finest inventions, the band hopes to invite you to take a look back and peer forward.  The colorguard will be using Pilates Balls for the opener and then will spin flag and rifle.  The band will offer some movement moments as well as spin durin the "Mario" section.
